Credit transfer

Standards: Clause 3.5
The RTO accepts and provides credit to learners for units of competency and/or modules (unless licensing or regulatory requirements prevent this) where these are evidenced by:
– AQF certification documentation issued by any other RTO or AQF authorised issuing organisation, or
– authenticated VET transcripts issued by the Registrar.

QCI considerations

Have you documented your credit transfer process? If so, check that it covers:

  • how and when a student may apply for a credit transfer
  • what evidence you will accept
  • how you notify the student of the outcome of the application
  • what ‘authenticated’ means in your RTO
  • what to do in the case of superseded and equivalent units
  • what to do in the case of superseded and not equivalent units
  • where the evidence of credit transfer is kept
  • how a credit transfer will show on a student record

Scenario 1

Your RTO delivers the qualification CUA30920 Certificate III in Music. One of the units in this qualification is CUASOU317 Record and mix basic music demos.

A student presents a Statement of Attainment that certifies they have achieved competency in CUASOU307 Record and mix a basic music demo.

CUASOU307 Record and mix a basic music demo is superseded by and equivalent to CUASOU317 Record and mix basic music demos.

Question
Will you accept the superseded unit and award a credit transfer for the current unit?

The unit on the SOA is superseded by and equivalent to the current unit. Therefore, it is acceptable for a credit transfer.

ASQA has also clarified that there is no need to conduct mapping for a superseded equivalent unit. See here.

  • Where will the evidence of this credit transfer be kept?
  • How will it be recorded on the student's record of achievement?

Scenario 2

Follows from scenario 1.
Another student presents a Statement of Attainment that certifies they have achieved competency in CUSSOU302A Record and mix a basic music demo. However, in 2016 this unit was superseded by and equivalent to CUASOU307 Record and mix a basic music demo.

Then in 2021, CUASOU307 Record and mix a basic music demo was superseded by and equivalent to the current CUASOU317 Record and mix basic music demos.

Question
Will you accept the student's SOA and award a credit transfer for the unit that is in your Music qualification?

The unit on the SOA is superseded by and equivalent to another unit that has also been superseded by, but is equivalent to, the current unit. Therefore, it is acceptable for a credit transfer.

ASQA recommends that the RTO 'conduct mapping analysis, especially for those units that have been superseded twice or more despite still being deemed equivalent, to assure themselves the assessment of competence is still relevant.' See here.

If you do conduct a mapping analysis where will you file the completed document? Who else knows where to find it?
