Self-assurance: ASQA’s definition

Self-assurance involves providers having systems in place to critically examine their performance against the Standards and training outcomes, on an ongoing basis, to meet obligations and to identify ways to continuously improve outcomes.

RTO has systems in place to critically examine..

  • What does a system look like?
  • Will our current procedures be enough?
  • What does ‘critically examine’ look like?
  • Who does this critically examining?

..performance against Standards and training outcomes..

  • What is performance in this context?
  • What is meant by meeting obligations?
  • What constitutes a training outcome?
  • How do we measure them?

..on an ongoing basis.

  • How do we define ongoing basis?
  • How do we prove this activity?
  • What constitutes improvement?
  • How do we make it continuous?
  • How do we prove it?

Will self-assurance be an optional extra?

ASQA has been quite clear that every RTO will be expected to participate in the process. The new draft Standards require that ‘ongoing monitoring and evaluation informs the continuous improvement of services.’

Won't the RTO Standards matter any more?

The assurance process is a self-monitoring activity to make sure that an RTO stays compliant with the Standards.

How fast is all this going to happen?

ASQA has already made it clear that there will be a transition period to the self-assurance model and they will provide educative resources to assist RTOs to understand requirements.

I'm busy. Can't I get a consultant to do this?

Short answer is no. VET specialists will be able to assist with aspects of the process, but it is worth noting that the first word in the phrase ‘self-assurance’ is self. This means that people inside the organisation will be expected to be the main drivers.
